Established under the Nigerian Correctional Service Act of 2019, the NCoS—formerly known as the Nigerian Prison Service—plays a critical role in the country’s criminal justice system. Its key responsibilities include:
- Ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of individuals in custody.
- Managing the humane and secure treatment of inmates.
- Transporting individuals awaiting trial to and from the courts.
- Identifying and addressing the root causes of criminal behavior.
- Supporting rehabilitation and reintegration programs for offenders.
- Providing specialized care, including for high-risk or violent offenders.
- Offering access to education and vocational training for inmates.
- Operating juvenile correctional facilities (borstals) for young offenders.
