What is JAMB?

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a Nigerian entrance examination board that conducts the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). It is the body responsible for overseeing admissions into Nigeria’s tertiary institutions—universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and other diploma-awarding institutions.

Purpose of JAMB

JAMB was established to:

  • Conduct entrance exams for tertiary institutions.
  • Ensure a uniform standard for admitting students.
  • Manage the central admission process into Nigerian universities and other higher institutions.

The UTME Exam

Subjects Tested

Candidates are tested in four subjects, depending on the course they intend to study. English Language is compulsory for all candidates, while the other three subjects are based on the student’s desired program (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Biology for Medicine).

Exam Format

  • Conducted via Computer-Based Testing (CBT).
  • Usually held once a year (typically between March and June).
  • Each subject has 40 questions (160 questions total).
  • Duration: 2 hours.

Eligibility Requirements

To register and sit for JAMB UTME, a candidate must:

  • Possess a Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or equivalent with at least 5 credits including English and Mathematics.
  • Choose a Nigerian tertiary institution and meet its specific admission requirements.

JAMB Registration Process

  1. Create a JAMB Profile via the official portal or SMS.
  2. Purchase an e-PIN from an accredited vendor or online.
  3. Complete registration at a JAMB-accredited CBT center. 4
